Discover more about Lookout Studio

Lookout Studio, also known as "The Lookout," is a remarkable structure located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon within Grand Canyon National Park. Designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1914, it exemplifies her signature rustic style, blending seamlessly with the natural environment. The studio was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railway to offer visitors a place to rest and take in the views after exploring the canyon. Colter's design drew inspiration from the ancestral Puebloan dwellings of the region, using jagged native rocks to mimic indigenous structures. The building appears to grow organically from the canyon rim, with its multi-level rooflines and stone chimneys mirroring the shapes of the surrounding bedrock. The exterior is constructed of rough-cut limestone, further enhancing its natural appearance. Inside, Lookout Studio features multiple levels with viewing windows that frame different perspectives of the Grand Canyon. The interior is surprisingly bright, thanks to the large windows that allow ample natural light to illuminate the exposed stone walls and structural woodwork. For many years, visitors gathered here to share stories, warm themselves by the fire, and use telescopes to observe mule riders on the Bright Angel Trail. Today, Lookout Studio serves as a gift shop and observation station, offering visitors a chance to purchase souvenirs and enjoy panoramic views of the canyon. Telescopes are available on the outdoor terrace for closer observation. Lookout Studio is part of the Grand Canyon Village Historic District and a National Historic Landmark, solidifying its place as a significant piece of Grand Canyon history.
