Discover more about Verkamp's Visitor Center

Verkamp's Visitor Center, situated in the heart of Grand Canyon Village, provides a unique perspective on the human history of this natural wonder. The building itself has a rich past, beginning in 1898 when John Verkamp, an entrepreneur from Ohio, set up a tent to sell souvenirs to early Grand Canyon visitors. In 1906, he constructed the current building, which operated as Verkamp's Curio Shop for over a century. Inside, exhibits focus on the experiences of those who lived and worked at the Grand Canyon, offering insights into the challenges and triumphs of building a community on the edge of one of the world's most awe-inspiring landscapes. A timeline on the floor guides visitors through significant moments in local, national, and international history, providing context to the Grand Canyon's story. You'll find historical decorum sprinkled around the nooks, crannies, and fireplace. In 2008, the National Park Service purchased the building and transformed it into a visitor center. Today, visitors can explore the exhibits, purchase books and souvenirs at the Grand Canyon Conservancy Museum Store, and speak with park rangers to learn more about the park. Verkamp's Visitor Center stands as a testament to the enduring connection between people and the Grand Canyon.
