Discover more about The Abyss

The Abyss is a breathtaking viewpoint along Hermit Road on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, famed for its impressive vertical drop. Here, the canyon walls plunge a staggering 3,000 feet (914 meters) down to the Redwall Formation, offering visitors an unparalleled sense of the Grand Canyon's vastness. Unlike many other viewpoints that jut out into the canyon, The Abyss is recessed into the canyon wall. This unique indentation provides a direct, almost unsettling, perspective into the depths, highlighting the role of gravity and erosion in sculpting the landscape. White rock fragments scattered across the red slopes below offer visual evidence of these ongoing geological processes. From The Abyss, you can trace the winding path of Monument Creek as it carves its way through the canyon towards the broad expanse of the Tonto Plateau. In the distance, the Colorado River glints in the sunlight, and the towering sandstone column known as The Monument adds another layer of grandeur to the scene. The Abyss is also a quieter spot compared to other overlooks, offering a more serene experience.
