Discover more about Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway offers a unique journey back in time, transporting passengers from the town of Williams, Arizona, to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This 64-mile railway, originally completed in 1901 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, played a vital role in opening the Grand Canyon to tourism. For nearly 70 years, the railway ferried visitors to the canyon, but service declined with the rise of automobile travel and was discontinued in 1968. In 1988, private investors Max and Thelma Biegert purchased the dormant line, restored the tracks and refurbished the rolling stock, reviving passenger service on September 17, 1989. Today, the Grand Canyon Railway carries hundreds of passengers daily, offering a variety of classes from Pullman and Coach to First Class and Luxury Parlor. The 2-hour and 15-minute journey includes live entertainment, with musicians and cowboys. While the train doesn't offer views of the canyon itself, it drops you off just a short distance from the South Rim. The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams offers convenient packages that include train tickets, accommodation, and meals. The entire Grand Canyon Railway is a National Register of Historic Places, with both the Grand Canyon and Williams depots recognized for their historical significance.
