Getting There

• Car

  From any location in Prescott National Forest, navigate towards Thumb Butte Recreation Area by heading to the main roads. If you're in the downtown Prescott area, take Whipple Street north until it merges into Thumb Butte Road. Continue straight on Thumb Butte Road for approximately 3 miles. You will see signs for the Thumb Butte Recreation Area. The entrance is located at 2285 Thumb Butte Rd, Prescott, AZ 86305. There is no entrance fee for this area, but parking may be limited during peak seasons.

• Public Transportation

  If you're using public transportation, check the local bus service for routes that connect to Prescott. You may need to take a bus to the downtown area of Prescott first. From there, it's a roughly 3-mile walk to Thumb Butte Recreation Area. Follow the previous car route directions from downtown Prescott, taking Whipple Street to Thumb Butte Road. Ensure you have comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for varying terrain.

• Bicycle

  For those who prefer cycling, Thumb Butte Recreation Area is accessible via bike from Prescott. Starting from downtown Prescott, take the bike lane along Whipple Street north. After approximately 1 mile, you’ll reach Thumb Butte Road. Turn left onto Thumb Butte Road and continue biking for about 2 miles. The road is steep in some parts, so be prepared for a workout. Make sure to wear a helmet and be cautious of vehicle traffic.
