Discover more about Hemmed-In Hollow Falls

Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, located within the Ponca Wilderness Area of Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas, is a natural wonder that draws hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. The waterfall's impressive height of 209 feet (64 meters) makes it the tallest between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. The falls are located in a unique geological formation called Hemmed-In Hollow, a valley enclosed on three sides by towering 200-foot bluffs. This creates a secluded and dramatic setting for the waterfall. The flow of water over the falls varies with the seasons; it is most impressive after heavy rain, typically in late winter or early spring. During drier periods, the flow can diminish to a trickle, but the wind swirling in the canyon still creates a mesmerizing effect as the water breaks into thousands of droplets. There are multiple trails that lead to Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, each offering a different experience. The most direct route is from the Compton Trailhead, a 2.5-mile hike that descends into the hollow. While well-maintained, the trail is considered strenuous due to its steep descent and the subsequent climb back out. Another option is the Centerpoint Trailhead, which offers a less steep but longer and more rugged hike. For a less physically demanding approach, during canoe season (March - June) float the Buffalo River and hike a 1/2 mile to the falls. Historically, the area has been appreciated for its natural beauty for generations. In 1917, William O'Neill built a retreat at the base of the falls; today, only the stone foundations remain.
