Discover more about Hemmed-In Hollow Falls

Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, nestled within the Ponca Wilderness of the Buffalo National River, stands as the tallest waterfall between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, boasting a height of 209 feet. This natural wonder is located in a unique hollow, enclosed on three sides by impressive 200-foot bluffs. The most popular access to the falls is via the Compton Trailhead. This 5-mile round trip is considered a difficult hike, involving a steep descent into the hollow and a demanding climb back out, with a total elevation change equivalent to hiking to the top of the Empire State Building. The trail is well-maintained and marked with white blazes, but hikers should be prepared for loose rocks and potentially slippery conditions, especially after rainfall. Alternatively, a less strenuous but longer route is available from the Centerpoint Trailhead. This path also connects to other trails within the Ponca Wilderness, so carrying a detailed topographic map is recommended. For a unique approach, consider floating the Buffalo River and hiking a half-mile from the river trailhead to the falls. The waterfall's flow varies dramatically with the seasons. After heavy rains, typically in late winter or early spring, the falls surge powerfully. During drier months, the flow diminishes to a trickle, but the swirling wind in the hollow creates a mesmerizing dance of water droplets. Even with a reduced flow, the geology of the falls and the surrounding sandstone bluffs offer a worthwhile spectacle. Visitors can explore the area around the falls, including remnants of a retreat built in 1917. For those seeking more adventure, Diamond Falls, the second tallest waterfall in Arkansas, is located around the bend from Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, though reaching it involves a potentially hazardous scramble.
