Discover more about Hot Spring above Ground in Park

Hot Water Cascade is a prominent thermal spring within Hot Springs National Park, a unique blend of urban and natural landscapes. The cascade is the largest and most iconic spring in the park, easily accessible near Arlington Lawn and the historic downtown area. The hot spring originates from deep within the Ouachita Mountains, where water seeps through rocks and fissures, taking approximately 4,400 years to reach a depth of 8,000 feet. Heated by the Earth's core, the water rises through a thrust fault at the base of Hot Springs Mountain. The water emerges at an average temperature of 143 degrees Fahrenheit (62 degrees Celsius). As the thermal water flows, it passes through cooler groundwater, slightly reducing the temperature while retaining its mineral-rich composition. The cascade is a visual spectacle, with hot water emanating from the hillside near the Grand Promenade. The water flows under the path and down a steep cliff into two pools, creating a captivating scene. While there are no outdoor soaking opportunities, the cascade offers a chance to witness the natural hot springs that define the park.
