Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, located within the Ponca Wilderness Area of Buffalo National River, is a natural wonder that draws hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. The waterfall is celebrated as the tallest between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains, boasting a single, uninterrupted drop of 209 feet. The falls are located in a unique geological formation: a box canyon enclosed on three sides by bluffs towering over 200 feet. This creates a secluded and dramatic setting, enhancing the visual and auditory impact of the cascading water. The waterfall's flow varies with the seasons; it is most impressive during late winter and early spring when rainfall is abundant. At this time, the falls transform into a powerful torrent. In drier months, the flow diminishes, sometimes to a mere trickle, but the windblown mist and the colorful striations on the surrounding rocks still offer a captivating experience. Several trails provide access to Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, each offering a different hiking experience. The most popular and direct route is via the Hemmed-In Hollow Trail from the Compton Trailhead. This 2.5-mile (each way) trail descends steeply into the hollow, presenting a strenuous return climb. Another option is the Centerpoint Trailhead, which offers a less steep but still challenging hike. For those seeking a water-based approach, floating the Buffalo River and then hiking a half-mile to the falls provides an alternative perspective. Visitors should be well-prepared for the hike, regardless of the chosen trail. Sturdy footwear, ample water, and snacks are essential. A detailed topographic map is recommended due to the multiple intersecting trails in the Ponca Wilderness. The National Park Service advises that the Hemmed-In Hollow Trail is not suitable for children under 12 years old. The area around Hemmed-In Hollow is rich in natural beauty and offers opportunities for further exploration. Nearby Sneeds Creek has its own trail, and an historic log cabin can be found a short distance from the falls.
