Getting There

  • Walking

    From Gulpha Gorge Campground, the trailhead is located near the amphitheater. Walk towards Gulpha Creek, located to the right of the amphitheater, and cross the creek using the stone walkway. The trail begins immediately after crossing the creek. There is no fee to access the trail.

  • Public Transport

    From downtown Hot Springs, take the Intracity Transit bus towards Gulpha Gorge Campground. Check the Intracity Transit website for current routes and schedules. From the bus stop at the campground, walk towards the amphitheater and Gulpha Creek to find the trailhead. Bus fare is approximately $1.25 per ride.

  • Driving

    From downtown Hot Springs, follow US Hwy 70B (Gorge Road) east. Turn into Gulpha Gorge Campground. Parking is available in the Gulpha Gorge Picnic Area. From the parking area, walk towards the amphitheater and Gulpha Creek to find the trailhead. Parking is free. Limited RV and bus parking is available.

The Gulpha Gorge Trail provides a vigorous, natural pathway from the Gulpha Gorge Campground into the heart of Hot Springs National Park. This 0.6-mile (1 km) trail, while short, presents a significant elevation change of approximately 400 feet (122 meters), making it a strenuous climb. The trail begins near the amphitheater in Gulpha Gorge Campground, crossing Gulpha Creek via a stone walkway. The path then ascends steeply through a lush forest, with the sounds of the creek accompanying much of the journey. The trail connects to the Hot Springs Mountain Trail and Goat Rock Trail, allowing hikers to extend their exploration. Historically, the Gulpha Gorge area has been a point of interest since the early 19th century. In 1804, explorers William Dunbar and George Hunter visited the area, referring to Gulpha Creek by a French name that eventually evolved into its current designation. In the early 20th century, the area became a popular camping spot, leading to the establishment of the Gulpha Gorge Campground. In May 1924, the first trail shelter was built along the trail that led to the Gulpha Gorge Campground. Today, the Gulpha Gorge Trail remains a popular hiking option, offering a challenging workout and access to the broader trail system of Hot Springs National Park.
