Discover more about Hot Spring above Ground in Park

Hot Springs National Park, nestled in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas, is home to 47 natural hot springs. The park uniquely intertwines with the city, offering a blend of natural beauty and urban accessibility. The hot spring water, approximately 4,000 years old, originates as rainfall and is heated deep within the Earth. The Hot Water Cascade on Arlington Lawn is the most visible and iconic spring in the park. The thermal water emerges from the hillside near the Grand Promenade and flows down a cliff into two pools. While the water emerges at an average temperature of 143°F (62°C), it cools enough to touch by the time it reaches the pools. These hot springs were considered so valuable that in 1832, Congress designated them as a reservation, marking the first time the U.S. government protected a natural resource. This action predates Yellowstone National Park by 40 years. Today, the park offers a variety of activities, including hiking trails, scenic drives, and historic bathhouses.
