Discover more about Hemmed-In Hollow Falls

Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, located within the Ponca Wilderness Area of Buffalo National River, is a sight to behold. Plunging 209 feet (64 meters), it holds the title of the tallest waterfall between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. The falls are nestled in Hemmed-In Hollow, a box canyon enclosed on three sides by towering 200-foot bluffs. The area is accessible via several hiking trails, with the most popular route being the 5.7-mile round trip from the Compton Trailhead. This trail is considered strenuous, involving a steep descent of nearly 1,400 feet into the hollow, followed by a challenging ascent back to the trailhead. Hikers should be prepared for a full-day adventure and carry plenty of water and snacks. The trail is well-marked with white, rectangular blazes labeled "HIH". While the hike can be demanding, the reward is well worth the effort. Along the way, hikers are treated to scenic vistas of the Buffalo River and the surrounding Ozark Mountains. The waterfall itself is most dramatic after rainfall, when water spills heavily over the cliff. During drier periods, the flow may be reduced to a trickle, but the wind swirling in the canyon creates a mesmerizing dance of water droplets. For a less strenuous approach, consider floating the Buffalo River and hiking a half-mile to the falls from the river trailhead. However, this option is only available during canoe season (March - June). Near Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, adventurous hikers can explore Diamond Falls, Arkansas's second-tallest waterfall. To reach Diamond Falls, scramble up the hill on the right side of Hemmed-In Hollow Falls and follow a ledge around the bluff. However, this route is considered unsafe by some. Whether you choose to hike or float, a visit to Hemmed-In Hollow Falls promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Ozark wilderness.
