Discover more about Central springs mineral Reserve

Central Springs Mineral Reserve, located in the heart of Daylesford, is a testament to the region's rich history and natural beauty. Established in 1881, the reserve was initially created to protect the banks of Wombat Creek, a vital water source for gold miners. Today, it stands as a serene retreat where visitors can experience the area's renowned mineral springs. The reserve features three hand pumps that draw water from the same mineral spring bore. Each pump offers a unique taste, reflecting the distinct mineral composition of the water. The springs are located in the valley of Wombat Creek, downstream from Lake Daylesford, creating a picturesque setting for relaxation and exploration. In recent years, the Central Springs Mineral Reserve has undergone significant redevelopment. The project, completed in 2024, delivers three new mineral spring pumps (1 accessible), complemented by Dja Dja Wurrung artwork. New pathways connect the pump area to new BBQ and picnic shelter installed by DJANDAK, a DJAARA enterprise working to revitalise Country for community benefit. The reserve now features brass artworks by Timani Nicholls-Moore, inlaid into the concrete splash pad. These improvements enhance the visitor experience while honoring the indigenous heritage of the area. Visitors can also explore the nearby Hard Hill mineral spring trench, a preserved example of how mineral springs were accessed over a century ago. The Goldfields Track connects Central Springs with other springs in the Daylesford, Hepburn, and Castlemaine area, offering opportunities for extended walks and exploration. The reserve is not only a place for relaxation and recreation but also a site of historical significance. During the gold rush, the springs provided a refreshing alternative to often-polluted stream water. By the end of the 20th century, as gold mining declined, the demand for mineral water increased, leading to the growth of guest houses and the popularity of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs as health and holiday resorts.
