The Old Town of Graz, or Altstadt, is a remarkable testament to the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, with an expansion in 2010 to include Eggenberg Castle, the Old Town showcases a harmonious blend of styles from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Graz emerged in the 12th century under the Babenberg dukes, transforming into a bustling commercial hub. The Habsburgs later shaped the city, particularly during King Rudolph I's reign in 1281, establishing Graz as a seat of power with the Schloßberg castle as their residence. The Renaissance in the 16th century further influenced Graz through Italian architects and artists. Today, the Old Town thrives as a dynamic cultural center. Visitors can explore numerous museums, government buildings, the cathedral, and the iconic Clock Tower (Uhrturm) on the Schloßberg. The Glockenspiel, with its dancing wooden figures, adds to the city's charm. The Hauptplatz, or main square, is surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings. The city's commitment to preserving its heritage is evident in its careful integration of new architecture with the old. A stroll through the Old Town's narrow streets reveals hidden alleys, romantic courtyards, and ornate facades. The Landhaus courtyard, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, is a must-see. Sporgasse, one of the city's most romantic streets, leads uphill with its cobblestone paths. The city's green spaces, like Stadtpark, offer a tranquil escape. Graz seamlessly blends its historical legacy with a vibrant, modern lifestyle, making it a captivating destination.
