Discover more about Leopoldskroner Weiher

Leopoldskroner Weiher, a serene lake nestled in the Riedenburg district of Salzburg, offers a tranquil escape from the city bustle. Created around 1500 to manage overflow from the Almkanal, the 13-hectare lake has been part of the Leopoldskron Palace park since the 18th century. The lake and palace gained international fame as a filming location for 'The Sound of Music'. Today, Leopoldskroner Weiher is a popular recreational area for both locals and tourists. A footpath encircles the lake, providing stunning views of Leopoldskron Palace, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the Gaisberg mountain. The area is a protected landscape, home to diverse wildlife, including ducks, geese, swans, and various bird species. Swimming is not permitted to protect the habitat, but visitors can enjoy leisurely walks, birdwatching, and picnicking. In winter, the lake sometimes freezes over, offering opportunities for ice skating, though this is not always possible due to water movement. The lake's history is intertwined with Schloss Leopoldskron, built in 1736 by Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian. The palace has served various purposes over the centuries, including as an army base and a venue for Max Reinhardt's Baroque-inspired garden parties. In 1945, bombs damaged the palace and lake during WWII. Today, the palace is home to the Salzburg Global Seminar and a hotel.
