Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, drive towards Salzburg city center. From the Kaiser Mountains area, you can take the A10 motorway, then switch to the A1 towards Salzburg. Once you reach the city, follow signs for Mönchsberg. There is a parking garage at the base of the fortress, specifically at 'Mönchsberg Parkplatz.' The parking fee is approximately €2 per hour.

• Public Transportation

  To reach the Fortress Hohensalzburg via public transport, take a train or bus to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (the main train station). From there, you can catch bus line 5 towards 'Mönchsberg' or 'Festungsbahn.' Get off at the 'Festung Hohensalzburg' stop. The bus ride costs about €2-3. After disembarking, you will need to walk a short distance to the fortress entrance.

• Funicular

  If you prefer a more scenic route, you can take the funicular railway (Festungsbahn) from the base of the hill. After reaching the 'Mönchsberg Parkplatz,' walk to the funicular station. The ticket for the funicular costs around €12 for a round trip. The funicular will take you directly to the fortress, offering stunning views along the way.

• Walking

  For the more adventurous, you can hike up to Fortress Hohensalzburg. Starting from the city center, follow the signs for Mönchsberg, which will lead you to a well-marked trail. The hike takes approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the ascent can be steep.
