Discover more about Schloss Leopoldskron

Schloss Leopoldskron, picturesquely situated on the Leopoldskroner Weiher lake, is a captivating landmark with a rich and complex history. Built in 1736 by Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian, it initially served as his family residence. The palace's construction was partly an attempt to solidify the family's social standing after the Archbishop's controversial expulsion of over 20,000 Protestants from Salzburg. In 1918, the renowned theater impresario Max Reinhardt purchased Schloss Leopoldskron and transformed it into a vibrant center for the arts. For 20 years, the palace served as a meeting place for artists, writers, composers, and designers from across Europe and beyond. Reinhardt, along with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, co-founded the Salzburg Festival here in 1920. During World War II, the Nazis confiscated Schloss Leopoldskron in 1938, using it as a guesthouse for prominent Nazi artists and administrators. After the war, the palace was returned to Reinhardt's family, and in 1947, it became the home of the Salzburg Global Seminar, an organization focused on fostering dialogue and finding solutions to global challenges. Since 1965, Schloss Leopoldskron has gained international recognition as a filming location for the iconic movie 'The Sound of Music'. Today, the palace operates as a hotel and event venue, offering luxurious suites and rooms with exclusive charm. While access to the palace, park grounds, and historic landmarks is generally restricted to hotel guests and event attendees, the location continues to enchant visitors with its rich history and magical setting.
