Discover more about Burgruine Kammerstein

Burgruine Kammerstein, located near Perchtoldsdorf, is a captivating castle ruin that offers a glimpse into the region's medieval past. Situated on a rocky hill south of the Dürren Liesing valley, at an elevation of 420 meters, the ruins provide stunning views of the surrounding area. The castle's origins trace back to the second half of the 13th century. However, there are indications of an earlier fortification on the site, which was expanded by the Ehrenfelser family. The castle's design cleverly utilized the limited space on the rock, resulting in a relatively spacious complex despite its small size. Burgruine Kammerstein's history is intertwined with various noble families and historical events. In the late 13th century, the Ehrenfelsers were involved in an uprising against Duke Albrecht of Habsburg and even opened their castles to the Duke's enemies. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several families, including the Kraigs and the Süßenheimers, before being sold to Emperor Friedrich III in 1464. By the 16th century, Burgruine Kammerstein had already fallen into disrepair. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and imagine what life was like within its walls centuries ago. Although the site is not actively maintained, its exposed location has prevented it from being used as a stone quarry, preserving much of its structure.
