Hohenauer Teich: A Tranquil Oasis in Vienna's Woods

Hohenauer Teich, nestled within Vienna's expansive Lainzer Tiergarten, provides a tranquil escape from the city's energetic pace. Located near the Lainzer Tor, the main entrance to the preserve, this serene pond invites visitors to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the Viennese Woods. Originally enclosed by a wooden fence, it was later replaced with a stone wall in 1781. In 1919, it was opened to the public. Today, the Lainzer Tiergarten spans 24.5 square kilometers, with approximately 80% covered in woodland, offering diverse habitats for a wide array of flora and fauna. The Hohenauer Teich is an artificial pond created by damming the Lainzer Bach. While its exact origins remain unclear, it has become a focal point within the Tiergarten, attracting visitors seeking respite and natural beauty. A 1995 study confirmed the pond's excellent water quality; however, swimming is not permitted to preserve the delicate ecosystem. The Lainzer Tiergarten is home to diverse wildlife, including wild boars, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, and mouflons.
