Goygol National Park, located in western Azerbaijan, is a haven of natural beauty centered around the iconic Lake Goygol. Established in 2008 on the basis of the former Goy Gol State Reserve , the park spans 12,755 hectares and protects a rich ecosystem of subalpine zones on the northern slopes of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. The park's centerpiece, Lake Goygol (meaning 'Blue Lake'), was created by a powerful earthquake in 1139 when part of Mount Kapaz collapsed, damming the Akhsu River.
