Discover more about Boyuk Bazar Mosque

Located in the ancient city of Lankaran, the Boyuk Bazar Mosque, also known as the Great Bazaar Mosque, has been a central religious site since its construction in 1864. The mosque's name is derived from its location in the Boyuk Bazar neighborhood. The mosque was constructed using funds collected by community members. The mosque's architecture reflects rural Islamic design, featuring a single minaret that stands out against the city skyline. The facade is adorned with arched windows featuring stained-glass elements in purple, red, and amber hues that create a beautiful play of light within the mosque's interior. The building is made with timber and baked bricks, with a roof covered in tiles. The mosque has a rectangular ceiling supported by six columns. During the Soviet era, the mosque faced challenges, with its minaret demolished in 1938 and the building repurposed as a bakery and later a photo gallery. However, following Azerbaijan's independence, the mosque was restored, and a new 36-meter minaret was erected in 1995. Today, the Boyuk Bazar Mosque is protected by the state as an architectural monument of history and culture.
