Discover more about NILADRI Lake (নিলাদ্রী লেক)

Niladri Lake, officially named Shaheed Siraj Lake, is located in the Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj, Bangladesh. This mesmerizing lake, often called the 'Kashmir of Bengal', is a testament to nature's transformative power. What was once a bustling limestone quarry has evolved into a serene and captivating lake, drawing tourists from across the country and beyond. In the 1940s, the area was identified as a rich source of limestone, a crucial raw material for the Assam Bengal Cement Factory. Mining operations continued until 1996 when the project was declared a loss-making venture, and limestone extraction ceased. Over time, the abandoned quarry naturally filled with rainwater and underground springs, giving birth to the stunning Niladri Lake. The lake's name, 'Niladri,' which translates to 'blue lake,' perfectly captures the vibrant hue of its waters. The water's clarity is such that it reflects the sky above, creating an illusion of a sapphire jewel nestled amidst the hills. Adding to the lake's allure are the surrounding hills, which form a natural amphitheater, enhancing the sense of tranquility and seclusion. These hills are part of the lower reaches of the Meghalaya range in India. Niladri Lake also holds historical significance. It is officially named Shaheed Siraj Lake in honor of Sirajul Islam, a freedom fighter who was martyred during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. A memorial dedicated to Sirajul Islam and other fallen freedom fighters stands near the lake, serving as a reminder of their sacrifice.
