Discover more about Niladri lake Point

Niladri Lake, also known as Shaheed Siraj Lake, is a captivating destination located in the Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj, Bangladesh. This hidden gem, often referred to as the 'Kashmir of Bengal' by tourists, features stunning turquoise waters cradled by the rolling hills of Meghalaya. Originally, the area was a bustling limestone quarry, providing resources for the Assam Bengal Cement Factory (now Chhatak Cement Factory). Mining operations began in the 1940s and continued for several decades, significantly contributing to the local economy. In 1996, the quarry was shut down due to financial losses, leaving behind a vast, excavated pit. Over time, rainwater and underground springs gradually filled the abandoned quarry, giving birth to the stunning Niladri Lake. The lake's name, 'Niladri,' which translates to 'blue lake,' perfectly captures the vibrant hue of the water, a result of the limestone deposits at its base. The water's clarity reflects the sky above, creating an illusion of a sapphire jewel nestled amidst the hills. Adding to the lake's allure are the surrounding hills, which form a natural amphitheater, enhancing the sense of tranquility and seclusion. The border between Bangladesh and India runs along the upper reaches of these hills, marked by barbed-wire fences that add a unique element to the landscape. Beyond its natural beauty, Niladri Lake also holds historical significance. It is officially named Shaheed Siraj Lake in honor of Sirajul Islam, a freedom fighter who was martyred during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. A memorial dedicated to Sirajul Islam and other fallen freedom fighters stands near the lake, serving as a reminder of their sacrifice. Niladri Lake is conveniently located near other popular tourist destinations in Sunamganj, making it easy to combine a visit with other attractions. Tanguar Haor, a vast wetland ecosystem and a Ramsar site, is just a short distance away. Other nearby attractions include Barikka Tila, Jadukata River, and Shimul Bagan, offering a diverse range of natural and cultural experiences.
