Discover more about Christ the Redeemer

Rising 30 meters (98 feet) high, with arms stretching 28 meters (92 feet) wide, the statue is a global symbol of Christianity and Brazilian cultural pride. The idea for a religious monument on Corcovado Mountain dates back to the 1850s, but it wasn't until after World War I that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro spearheaded the project to counter a perceived decline in religious faith. Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the statue, and French sculptor Paul Landowski sculpted it. The statue is constructed of reinforced concrete and soapstone, chosen for its resistance to extreme weather. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1931, funded largely by Brazilian Catholics. Visitors can reach the statue by train, van, or hiking. The Corcovado Train is the most traditional and scenic route, ascending through the Tijuca National Park. Official vans offer convenient transportation from various points in the city. Once at the summit, visitors are rewarded with unparalleled views of Rio de Janeiro, including Sugarloaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, and Maracanã Stadium. A chapel at the base of the statue was consecrated in 2006, marking the statue's 75th anniversary. Christ the Redeemer attracts approximately 2 million visitors annually and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The site has undergone several renovations and repairs over the years, including a major project in 2010 and periodic cleaning.
