Discover more about Arquivo Histórico Judaico de Pernambuco

Located in the heart of Recife on the historic Rua do Bom Jesus, the Arquivo Histórico Judaico de Pernambuco offers a compelling look into the history of Jewish life in Brazil. The archive is housed within a building that was once the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, established in 1636 during the Dutch occupation of Recife. During the 17th century, Recife became a haven for Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. The Dutch West India Company, attracted by the region's sugar plantations, fostered an environment of religious freedom that allowed the Jewish community to flourish. Kahal Zur Israel served as the center of Jewish life, with records indicating a well-organized community that included a Talmud Torah school, a charity fund, and a supervising executive committee. In 1642, Rabbi Isaac Aboab da Fonseca, a prominent Amsterdam rabbi, arrived to lead the congregation. However, this period of tolerance was short-lived. In 1654, the Portuguese reconquered Recife, and the Inquisition was reinstated, leading to the expulsion of the Jewish community. The synagogue was abandoned, and its history faded into obscurity. In 2000, the building was recognized as a national historical patrimony, and the Arquivo Histórico Judaico de Pernambuco was established to preserve and share the story of this important chapter in Jewish and Brazilian history. Visitors to the archive can explore a collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that detail the history of the Jewish community in Pernambuco. The archive also showcases the contributions of Jewish settlers to the local culture and economy. The building's architecture reflects the historical influences that have shaped Recife over the centuries.
