Discover more about Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão

Located in Recife Antigo, the historical heart of the city, the Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão is more than just a museum; it's a dynamic cultural hub that brings the spirit of the Sertão to the coast. Opened in 2014, this modern and interactive space is dedicated to celebrating the culture and traditions of the Sertão region of Northeastern Brazil, with a special focus on the life and work of Luiz Gonzaga, the iconic 'King of Baião'. The museum's architecture is a blend of modern design and traditional elements, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The building incorporates features reminiscent of both the coast and the Sertão, symbolized by a Juazeiro tree, native to the caatinga, which greets visitors at the entrance. The architectural project was designed by Brasil Arquitetura, also responsible for the Museu Rodin (BA) and the Praça das Artes (SP). A striking element is the giant cobogó (a type of hollow concrete block) inspired by the region's lacework, providing shade and ventilation. The Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão is divided into seven thematic areas, each exploring different aspects of Sertão culture: living, occupying, working, singing, believing, creating, and migrating. Through interactive exhibits, multimedia installations, and sensory experiences, visitors can immerse themselves in the music, art, history, and daily life of the Sertão people. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and live performances, offering deeper engagement with local artists and their crafts. A highlight is the 'Sertão Mundo' film, projected on a 180-degree screen, creating an immersive journey through time and space. The museum aims to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Northeast, fostering a deeper understanding of the region's role in shaping Brazil's identity.
