Discover more about Duque de Caxias Fort

Perched atop Leme Rock, the Duque de Caxias Fort offers a unique blend of military history and breathtaking scenery. Constructed between 1776 and 1779, the fort, originally named Forte da Vigia (Watchtower Fort), was strategically built to protect Guanabara Bay and warn other fortifications of approaching enemy vessels. The construction was ordered by the Portuguese government out of fear of Spanish invasions. Over the years, the fort has played various roles, including during the Brazilian War of Independence. In 1895, after the Proclamation of the Brazilian Republic, it was renamed Forte do Leme, and in 1935, it received its current name, Forte Duque de Caxias. Its officers were involved in several revolts throughout Brazilian history. Today, visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved structures, including ammunition magazines, control centers, and power stations. The fort also features a collection of historical artifacts. The main draw, however, is the unparalleled 360-degree views of Rio de Janeiro, encompassing iconic landmarks such as Copacabana Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, and Cagarras Islands. The path to the fort winds through a protected natural area, a small remaining part of the Atlantic Rain Forest, where you might spot monkeys.
