Largo Terreiro de Jesus: The Heart of Salvador's Historic Charm

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are starting from the Mercado Modelo, exit the market and head towards the Elevador Lacerda, a large elevator that connects the lower city with the upper city. Take the elevator to the top, and once you exit, walk straight ahead to Praça Tomé de Souza, where the beautiful city hall (Palácio da Câmara Municipal) is located. From there, head towards Rua da Misericórdia, passing by the Igreja de São Francisco on your left. Continue on Rua da Misericórdia until you reach the intersection with Rua das Portas do Carmo, then turn right. Follow this road until you reach Largo Terreiro de Jesus, which will be on your left. You will recognize it by the beautiful church and vibrant atmosphere.

• Public Transport

  If you are near the Barra area, walk to the nearest bus stop and catch a bus that goes towards the city center (Centro). Buses marked 'Centro' will take you to the main area of Salvador. Get off at the stop closest to Praça da Sé. From there, walk towards the historic Pelourinho area. Follow the signs to Largo Terreiro de Jesus, which is a short walk uphill. Take the main streets leading through Pelourinho, and you'll find Largo Terreiro de Jesus on your left, surrounded by colorful colonial buildings and lively activities.

• Walking

  If you are at the Cathedral Basilica of Salvador (Catedral Basílica), exit the cathedral and walk down the hill towards Praça da Sé. Continue walking straight until you reach Rua da Misericórdia. Turn left onto Rua da Misericórdia, and follow it until you arrive at Largo Terreiro de Jesus. You’ll pass by some charming shops and eateries along the way, and you can’t miss the stunning architecture as you approach the square.
