Discover more about Elevador Lacerda

The Elevador Lacerda is more than just a means of transportation; it's a symbol of Salvador's history and ingenuity. Inaugurated in 1873, it was initially named the Elevador Hidráulico da Conceição da Praia. The elevator was conceived to solve the challenge of traversing the steep escarpment that divides Salvador, facilitating the movement of people and goods between the upper administrative and historical center and the lower commercial district. Originally powered by a hydraulic system, the elevator was electrified in 1906 and later renovated in 1930, receiving its current Art Deco facade. The elevator has two towers, one piercing the Ladeira da Montanha's stone slope and the other descending to the Cidade Baixa level. Today, the Elevador Lacerda efficiently transports passengers in its four lifts, each carrying up to 27 people in a quick, 30-second ride. It is estimated that the elevator transports around 900,000 passengers per month, becoming an essential part of daily life for locals and an unforgettable experience for tourists. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the bay, the Mercado Modelo, and the Forte de São Marcelo.
