The Obelisco and Mausoleum to the Constitutionalist Soldier of 1932, also known as the Obelisco do Ibirapuera or Obelisco de São Paulo, is a Brazilian funerary monument that pays homage to the 713 soldiers who died during the Constitutionalist Revolution against the government of Getúlio Vargas. The revolution sought a new constitution for the country. Located in the Vila Mariana neighborhood, though technically separate from Ibirapuera Park by the Avenida Pedro Álvares Cabral, the obelisk is the largest monument in the city, standing 72 meters (236 feet) tall. Construction began in 1947 and concluded in 1970, with its inauguration on July 9, 1955, a year after the opening of Ibirapuera Park. The monument was designed by Italo-Brazilian sculptor Galileo Ugo Emendabili, who fled the fascist regime in Italy and arrived in Brazil in 1923. The interior of the Obelisco is in the shape of a cross and contains panels made with Venetian mosaic tiles depicting the birth, sacrifice, and resurrection of Jesus. Inside, there are 800 funerary urns and three chapels. The remains of the students Martins, Miragaia, Dráusio, and Camargo (MMDC), who died during the 1932 Revolution, and 713 other ex-combatants are housed within the mausoleum. The remains of Guilherme de Almeida and Ibrahim de Almeida Nobre, former combatants considered the poet and tribune of 1932, respectively, are also buried there, as well as Paulo Virgínio, considered a martyr of the movement. The square where the monument stands symbolizes a heart, sheltering a crypt in the form of a Greek cross supported by arches reminiscent of the traditional arcades of the Faculty of Law of Largo São Francisco, the birthplace of the 1932 movement. The base of the Obelisco is aligned with the center of the cross, and the marble soldier statue is at the center of both the cross and the circle formed by the Obelisco's base.
