Discover more about Museum of the State Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro

The Museum of the State Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro offers a glimpse into the history and operations of law enforcement in the region. Established in 1912, the museum initially served as a training resource for police academy students before opening to the public in the 1930s. The museum is located in a French eclectic-style building dating back to 1910, designed by architect Heitor de Mello. Its collections are divided into sections that display the history of the police force, including exhibits on uniformed officers, technical police, political police, and early communication methods. Visitors can also view displays of confiscated firearms, armaments, and items related to "forbidden games". Of particular note is the museum's collection of objects related to Afro-Brazilian cults, gathered by police in the early 20th century and later recognized for their ethnographic value. The museum also holds materials seized from the Brazilian Integralism movement and Nazi-related items.
