Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's bustling Centro district, the Venerável Confraria Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa stands as a testament to centuries of faith and devotion. This church's origins trace back to the early 18th century, when a brotherhood was established by black devotees. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lampadosa, whose image was brought from the island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean. According to the legend, the Virgin Mary appeared on the island of Lampedusa to an Italian man enslaved by pirates. Initially, the brotherhood congregated at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito. However, with a donation of land, the construction of their own church began around 1740. The current structure dates back to 1936, showcasing an eclectic style with neo-classical and Hispanic influences. Architects Paulo Candiota and Eduardo de Sá designed the rebuilt church. It is said that Tiradentes, a key figure in Brazil's independence movement, paused before this church to pray on his way to execution. Inside, the church provides a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. The interior is adorned with religious imagery and a simple altar. The Venerável Confraria remains an active place of worship, with masses held throughout the week. It also emphasizes the importance of the Eucharist, Confession, and Adoration.
