The Baths: Virgin Gorda's Granite Wonderland
Explore the geological wonders of The Baths in Virgin Gorda: a Caribbean playground of granite boulders, hidden grottos, and pristine beaches.
The Baths, located on the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda, are a geological marvel and one of the most popular attractions in the British Virgin Islands. Here, towering granite boulders, some as large as houses, create a surreal landscape of sheltered sea pools, hidden grottoes, and white-sand beaches. Formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity, the molten rock cooled slowly beneath the earth's surface, creating a hard crystalline granite layer. Over time, the softer volcanic rock eroded away, exposing these massive boulders, which were further shaped by weathering and the relentless crashing of waves. Today, visitors can explore this natural playground by swimming in the crystal-clear pools, snorkeling in the underwater caves, and hiking through the maze of rocks and tunnels. The Baths also offer a glimpse into the island's history, with legends whispering of pirates using the hidden caves as secret hideaways and smuggling routes. The park encompasses the beaches and rocky shoreline. The most famous section is the Cathedral Room, a triangular room formed by two boulders with light shining through the cracks. Visitors can also explore Devil's Bay, a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay accessible through a trail that winds through the boulders.
