Discover more about Trunk Cay, United States Virgin Islands

Trunk Cay, a small islet just off the shore of Trunk Bay on St. John, is a gem within the Virgin Islands National Park. Named for the leatherback turtles, known locally as 'trunks,' that inhabit the area, this islet offers more than just a picturesque view; it's a hub of underwater exploration. Trunk Cay is easily accessible from Trunk Bay Beach, a crescent of white sand and turquoise water consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. The islet itself is characterized by rocky cliffs, coral sandy beaches, and palm trees, rising to an elevation of 48 feet. The main draw of Trunk Cay is the underwater snorkeling trail provided by the National Park Service. This 650-700 foot trail, located on the western side of the cay, is marked with underwater plaques that provide information about the reef and its inhabitants. Snorkelers can observe a diverse array of marine life, including colorful fish, coral formations, and even sea turtles. The shallow depths, typically between 8 and 20 feet, make it an ideal spot for beginners and families. More experienced snorkelers can venture around the entire islet, though the eastern side is known to have fewer corals due to stronger waves. Trunk Bay and Trunk Cay were once part of a sugar cane estate during the colonial period. In 1958, Laurance Rockefeller purchased the cove and surrounding land, later donating it to the National Park Service, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Today, Trunk Bay boasts amenities such as a snack bar, showers, restrooms, and snorkel gear rentals, making it a convenient and enjoyable destination for all.
