Discover more about Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas

The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, also known as Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasadim (Blessing and Peace and Acts of Piety), stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Judaism in the Caribbean. Founded in 1796 by Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic Jews, it is one of the oldest synagogues in continuous use under the American flag. The current building, constructed in 1833, reflects a blend of Caribbean materials, Greek, and Gothic Revival styles, creating a unique architectural landmark. Inside, the synagogue features a serene atmosphere with beautiful stained-glass windows and intricate woodwork. The sand floor is a distinctive element, reminiscent of the Spanish Conversos who prayed in secrecy with sand to muffle the sounds. Mahogany pews, an Ark holding six Torahs, and Baccarat crystal candelabra add to the synagogue's unique character. The Weibel Memorial Museum, located in the back foyer, showcases the history of the Jewish community in St. Thomas, with images, artifacts, and plaques commemorating congregants and governors. The synagogue also holds a Torah scroll rescued from the Holocaust, a gift from the Westminster Synagogue Holocaust Scroll Memorial Trust. The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. It represents the tenacity of Judaism and the hope of religious freedom in the New World.
