Travel Guide to Ledenoto Ezero Shelter

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major town, which is Dupnitsa. From Dupnitsa, take the E79 road towards Rila Monastery. After approximately 30 km, follow the signs for Rila Monastery and then turn onto the road leading to the Rila National Park entrance. Once you reach the park, continue driving until you find a designated parking area. The nearest parking lot is at the base of the hiking trail to Ledenoto Ezero Shelter. From the parking area, the shelter is about a 1-hour hike uphill. Ensure your vehicle is parked in a designated area to avoid fines.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Ledenoto Ezero Shelter using public transportation, take a bus from Sofia to Dupnitsa. Buses depart frequently from the Sofia Central Bus Station. Once in Dupnitsa, you can take a local bus or taxi to the Rila Monastery. From the Rila Monastery, you will need to hike approximately 1 hour to the shelter. Make sure to check the bus schedules ahead of time, as they can vary, especially on weekends. Bring sufficient water and snacks for the hike.

• Hiking

  After parking your car or arriving at the Rila Monastery, follow the marked hiking trail that leads to Ledenoto Ezero Shelter. The path is well-trodden but can be steep in some areas. The hike takes about 1 hour, and you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Make sure you wear proper hiking shoes and carry a map or GPS to navigate. Ensure you have a fully charged phone in case of emergencies.
