If you are driving, the closest major town is Yakoruda. From Yakoruda, take the road leading into the Rila Mountains. Follow the signs towards Rila Monastery. After about 15 kilometers, you will reach a fork in the road. Take the left fork which leads you towards the Dead Lake trailhead. Park your car at the designated parking area. The hike to The Dead Lake (Martvoto Ezero) will take approximately 1-1.5 hours depending on your pace.
Public Transportation
To reach The Dead Lake via public transportation, take a bus from Sofia to Yakoruda. Buses run several times a day and the journey takes around 2-3 hours. Once in Yakoruda, you can either take a taxi to the trailhead (approximately 10-15 leva) or inquire about local minibuses that might take you closer to the starting point of the hike. The trail to The Dead Lake from the drop-off point will take about 1-1.5 hours.
Hiking
