Discover more about Newport Beach- The Wedge

The Wedge, located at the southeastern tip of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California, is a legendary surf break known for its massive and often dangerous waves. These waves, which can reach up to 30 feet, are created by a combination of factors, most notably the rock jetty constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s. This jetty causes incoming swells to reflect and merge, creating unpredictable and powerful waves that break close to shore. The Wedge's history is rooted in tragedy and engineering. In 1926, George Rogers Jr. drowned in Newport Harbor, prompting his father to lobby for harbor improvements. The construction of the jetty, while intended to protect the harbor, inadvertently created the unique wave conditions that define The Wedge. Today, The Wedge is a popular destination for both surfers and spectators. Skilled bodysurfers and bodyboarders come from around the globe to challenge themselves against its challenging waves. For those who prefer to watch, the beach provides a perfect vantage point to witness the impressive displays of skill and the raw power of nature. Visitors can also explore the surrounding Balboa Peninsula, known for its charming boutiques, seaside restaurants, and beautiful oceanfront homes. The nearby Balboa Pier and Fun Zone offer additional attractions for a complete Newport Beach experience. Keep an eye out for local marine life, including dolphins and seals, that frequent the coastline. Note that boards are typically banned from 10 AM to 5 PM between May 1 and October 31, a rule enforced to ensure the safety of all beachgoers.
