Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From downtown San Francisco, several Golden Gate Transit buses (Routes 101, 130, 150) will take you to the Golden Gate Bridge. Board the bus at the Salesforce Transit Center or along Mission Street. Alternatively, take Muni Bus #28 from Fisherman's Wharf or Golden Gate Park directly to the Welcome Center. A one-way Muni fare is $3. Clipper cards are also accepted.

  • Walking

    From the Presidio Transit Center, you can walk to the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. Follow the signs towards the bridge, enjoying the scenic trails and views along the way. The walk is approximately 1.5 miles and takes about 30-40 minutes. Alternatively, take the free Presidio GO Shuttle to the Welcome Center.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can drop you off directly at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. A ride from Fisherman's Wharf typically costs between $20-$30, depending on traffic and demand. Be aware that traffic can be heavy, especially during peak hours and on weekends.

  • Driving

    If driving, follow US-101 to the Golden Gate Bridge. Limited parking is available at the Southeast Side Visitor Parking Lot, with rates of $5 per hour. Parking is limited to 3 hours. Note that this lot often closes on weekends and holidays from 11 AM to 5 PM. As of July 1, 2025, a toll of $9.75 is charged for crossing the Golden Gate Bridge southbound into San Francisco. Tolls are collected electronically. There is also a free parking lot on the northeast side of the bridge with a four hour limit.

The Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center is the perfect starting point for exploring one of the world's most famous landmarks. Opened in 2012 to coincide with the bridge's 75th anniversary, the Welcome Center offers visitors a chance to delve into the history, science, and engineering behind this iconic structure. Inside, you'll find exhibits showcasing authentic relics like rivets and hard hats used during the bridge's construction. A highlight is the 12-foot stainless steel "test tower" from 1933, which was used to evaluate the bridge's design. The center also provides visitor orientation, information services, and high-quality merchandise. Outside the Welcome Center, the visitor plaza features gathering spaces and interpretive exhibits. From here, you can easily access scenic viewpoints like Battery East, the Golden Gate Overlook, and the Pacific Overlook for stunning photo opportunities. The nearby Round House Cafe, an Art Deco building dating back to 1938, offers coffee and refreshments with a view. Free walking tours of the bridge are available on Thursdays and Sundays, led by San Francisco City Guides.
