Getting There

Shuttle

The Muir Woods Shuttle provides seasonal service from Larkspur Landing and Sausalito Ferry Terminal. From San Francisco, take the ferry to Larkspur or Sausalito and connect with the shuttle. Round-trip shuttle fare is $3.75 for adults; children 15 and under ride free. Reservations are required for the shuttle. Check the schedule at GoMuirWoods.com for operating days and times.
Public Transport & Hiking

For experienced hikers, Marin Transit routes 61 and 61F stop near the Mountain Home Inn, about 1.5 miles and 800 feet above Muir Woods. From the bus stop, take the Panoramic Trail to the Canopy View Trail to reach Muir Woods. Factor in a round-trip hike of 3 miles with 800 feet of elevation change. Marin Transit fares vary depending on the distance traveled. A day pass costs around $6.
Ride-Share/Taxi

You can take a ride-share or taxi to Muir Woods, but note that there is limited to no cell service at Muir Woods to call for a return ride. Arrange for a pre-scheduled pickup or negotiate a flat rate with the driver for the return trip. A one-way ride from Sausalito to Muir Woods is estimated to cost $30-$40.
Driving

From Highway 101, follow signs to Highway 1 and then to Muir Woods. Parking reservations are required at GoMuirWoods.com and cost $9.50 for a standard vehicle. Electric vehicle parking is $12.50. Arrive within your 30-minute arrival window. Be aware that the roads leading to Muir Woods are narrow and winding, and traffic can be heavy, especially during peak season.

Muir Woods National Monument, located in Marin County, California, is a testament to the power of conservation and the enduring beauty of nature. Just a few miles north of San Francisco, this 558-acre monument preserves one of the last remaining old-growth coast redwood forests in the Bay Area. Established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named after naturalist John Muir, the monument protects ancient redwoods, some nearly 1,000 years old and reaching heights of over 250 feet. Before becoming a national monument, the area was known as Redwood Canyon. In 1905, Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth purchased 611 acres of Redwood Canyon for $45,000 to protect the trees from logging. When a water company attempted to condemn the land for a reservoir, Kent donated 295 acres to the federal government. This act of generosity and foresight ensured the preservation of the redwoods for future generations. Visitors to Muir Woods can explore several trails, including accessible boardwalks and paved paths that wind through the heart of the redwood forest. These trails offer stunning views of the towering trees, lush undergrowth, and Redwood Creek, which flows through the park. The monument is home to diverse plant and animal life, including coho salmon and steelhead trout in Redwood Creek. The monument played a unique role on May 19, 1945, when delegates from 46 nations gathered in the park to honor the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. Muir Woods offers a tranquil escape into nature, where visitors can marvel at the grandeur of the redwoods and connect with the environment.
