Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park offers a captivating blend of history and natural beauty on the San Mateo County coast. Named after the clipper ship *Carrier Pigeon*, which wrecked nearby in 1853, the park's centerpiece is the iconic Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Built in 1872, the 115-foot tower has been a guiding light for ships navigating the treacherous waters. While the lighthouse is currently closed for restoration, visitors can still explore the grounds and admire the structure from the outside. The original first-order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, is on display in the Fog Signal Building. The coastal areas surrounding Pigeon Point are rich with wildlife, including seals, whales, and diverse bird species. The park also features a visitor center, exhibits, and a bookstore. Guided history walks are available, offering insights into the lighthouse's past and the lives of its keepers. For those seeking an extended stay, the park offers hostel accommodations in the former Coast Guard cottages. Restoration of the lighthouse began in February 2024 and is expected to last at least 18 months.
