Discover more about Presidio Park

Presidio Park, perched on a hill overlooking Old Town San Diego, is a place where California's history began. In 1769, Spanish explorers, led by Gaspar de Portola and Father Junípero Serra, established the San Diego Presidio and the Mission San Diego de Alcala here, marking the first European settlement on the West Coast. For centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, the Kumeyaay people inhabited this land. The hill became the center of a growing settlement, with the Presidio serving as a fortified city. Although the Mission later moved inland, the Presidio remained, eventually falling into ruin as its materials were used for construction in the growing town below. In 1907, George Marston, a prominent San Diegan, purchased Presidio Hill to preserve its history. Unable to secure public funding, he privately commissioned the park's design by John Nolen and funded the construction of the Junipero Serra Museum in 1925, designed by William Templeton Johnson. Marston donated the park to the city in 1929. Today, Presidio Park offers a blend of history and recreation. Visitors can explore the Junipero Serra Museum, wander through the park's open spaces, and enjoy panoramic views of the city, the San Diego River valley, and the Pacific Ocean. While none of the original Presidio structures remain, the park's grounds provide a tangible connection to California's colonial past. Key areas include Inspiration Point, Palm Canyon, Padre Cross, The Arbor, and Mission Hills Park, each offering unique perspectives and recreational opportunities.
