Getting There

  • Driving

    From Half Moon Bay, drive approximately 3 miles south on Highway 1. Look for the signed parking lot for Cowell Ranch Beach Access on the west side of the highway. Parking is free, but limited, especially on weekends. From the south, continue north on Highway 1 until you see the parking lot on the west side of the road.

  • Walking

    From the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, head south along Highway 1 for approximately 2.5 miles. Exercise caution as you walk along the highway. The Cowell Ranch Beach Access parking lot will be on your left.

Cowell Ranch Beach Access provides a serene coastal experience just south of Half Moon Bay. The area is characterized by rolling, grassy hills and dramatic cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The beach itself is accessed via a half-mile trail from the parking lot, which adds to its secluded and peaceful atmosphere. The trail meanders through active farmland, providing a glimpse into the region's agricultural heritage. Interpretive panels along the way offer insights into the area's history, flora, and fauna. Keep an eye out for hawks hunting over the fields and various bird species among the plants. The trail crosses the former rail bed of the Ocean Shore Railroad, adding a touch of historical intrigue. At the end of the trail, a staircase descends to the beach, a sandy cove framed by high bluff walls. The southern part of the beach is a protected harbor seal area, offering opportunities to observe these marine mammals, especially between February and May. Please note that access to Seal Beach is prohibited to protect the seals. The beach is also known for its geological features, with colorful layers of rocks and occasional fossils. However, rock collecting is not allowed. Be cautious of sneaker waves and rip currents.
