Discover more about Fort Stockton

Fort Stockton, situated on Presidio Hill in Old Town San Diego, offers a captivating journey into the region's layered past. The site was initially fortified in 1828 by the Mexican government to protect the Pueblo de San Diego and San Diego Bay, which was a major port for the hide and tallow trade. This elevated position provided a commanding view of the surrounding area, crucial for defense and surveillance. Abandoned in 1837, the earthen foundation remained largely untouched until the Mexican-American War in 1846. U.S. naval forces, recognizing its strategic importance, seized and reinforced the site, renaming it Fort DuPont. The fort briefly fell back into Californio hands before being retaken by American forces under Commodore Robert F. Stockton, who renamed it Fort Stockton. For a short period, it served as the headquarters for U.S. forces in Southern California. The Mormon Battalion also camped here briefly in 1847. While the fort itself was abandoned in 1848 after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, its legacy remains. Today, visitors can explore the site, marked by a historical marker since 1991, and imagine the lives of the soldiers and settlers who shaped San Diego. The panoramic views from Presidio Hill offer a unique perspective on the city's growth and evolution.
