Discover more about Glacier Point Trailside Museum

Perched at Glacier Point, 3,200 feet above Yosemite Valley, the Trailside Museum provides an unparalleled vantage point and a glimpse into the forces that shaped this iconic landscape. Constructed in 1924, with funding from Laura Spelman Rockefeller's estate, it exemplifies the National Park Service Rustic style, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Designed by Herbert Maier and Ansel Hall, the museum served as a prototype for visitor interpretation in national parks. The small stone shelter features arched openings offering framed views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the High Sierra. Inside, exhibits detail the geological features visible from the observation deck, enhancing visitors' understanding of Yosemite's formation. Originally a branch of the Yosemite Museum, the Trailside Museum quickly became a popular destination, drawing over 15,000 visitors in the summer of 1927. Today, it continues to serve as an interpretive facility, offering a unique perspective on Yosemite's natural history. While the original exhibits have been updated, the building's historic charm and stunning views remain a highlight for visitors. The museum also has an outdoor amphitheater where rangers give talks. Located a short walk from the Glacier Point parking lot, the Trailside Museum is accessible to all visitors. Whether arriving by car, bus, or hiking trail, the museum provides a rewarding experience for those seeking to connect with Yosemite's geological wonders.
