Discover more about The Ahwahnee

The Ahwahnee Hotel, a crown jewel of Yosemite National Park, opened its doors on July 16, 1927, with the goal of attracting well-to-do clientele. Situated on the valley floor, the hotel provides stunning views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Glacier Point. The Ahwahnee, whose name means "land of the gaping mouth" in the language of the Yosemite Valley's first residents, was designed in the National Park Service rustic style, also known as "parkitecture". Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who also designed Zion Lodge, Bryce Canyon Lodge, and Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge, designed the hotel. The hotel's construction is a story in itself. Because the hotel was being built in a national park, nothing within the confines could be used in the construction. Thousands of tons of building materials, furnishings and equipment had to brought to the site by trucks over primitive dirt roads. The exterior was constructed out of stained concrete poured into molds to simulate wood. This inventive design was chosen as an artistic element and also to add fire resistance to the structure. Throughout its history, the Ahwahnee has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities. During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the Ahwahnee as a convalescent hospital. Today, the hotel welcomes all visitors to experience its unique blend of luxury and natural splendor. Visitors can explore the hotel's historic design elements, artwork, and grounds, and even take a historical tour. The Ahwahnee offers a variety of rooms, parlors, and suites, decorated with Native American designs.
