History of Ratanakiri

Ratanakiri has been home to various indigenous tribes for centuries, including the Tampuan, Kreung, Jarai, and Brao peoples. These tribes have maintained a distinct cultural identity, with unique languages, traditions, and social structures. Their way of life is deeply connected to the natural environment, and many still practice traditional farming, hunting, and animist spiritual beliefs.
During the French colonial period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ratanakiri was part of French Indochina.
