History of Quindío Department

Before the arrival of Spanish colonizers, the region now known as Quindío was inhabited by indigenous peoples, primarily the Quimbaya civilization. Renowned for their advanced gold-working techniques, the Quimbaya left behind significant archaeological artifacts, including intricate gold jewelry and ceremonial objects. Their society was organized in small chiefdoms, and they thrived on agriculture, cultivating crops such as maize, beans, and yuca.
In the 16th century, the Spanish began their conquest of the region, which led to the eventual decline of the indigenous Quimbaya civilization. Armenia, the capital of Quindío Department, was founded on October 14, 1889, by Jesús María Ocampo, also known as 'Tigrero'. The city was named Armenia in honor of the Armenian people who faced genocide in the late 19th century.
