Valle de Cocora, or Cocora Valley, is a breathtaking landscape nestled in the heart of Colombia's coffee region. Located near the town of Salento in the Quindío Department, it's renowned for its surreal scenery dominated by the Quindío wax palm, Colombia's national tree, which can grow up to 60 meters tall. The name 'Cocora' comes from a Quimbayan princess, meaning 'star of water'. The valley is part of Los Nevados National Natural Park, protecting a diverse array of flora and fauna. The wax palms thrive at elevations up to 3,000 meters, creating a unique cloud forest ecosystem. Visitors can explore the valley through hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching. The most popular activity is hiking the loop trail, which takes visitors through verdant meadows, across rivers, and into the heart of the wax palm forest. The valley has historical significance, having been inhabited by the Quimbaya people, known for their distinctive gold jewelry work. To protect the endangered wax palm, the Colombian government declared it the national tree in 1985 and incorporated the valley into the national park system. Today, the Valle de Cocora remains a must-see destination, drawing travelers from around the globe to witness its unparalleled beauty.
