Discover more about Zapata Ranch

Zapata Ranch, sprawling across 103,000 acres in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, presents a unique blend of working ranch and conservation haven. Bordering the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the ranch is owned by The Nature Conservancy and managed by Ranchlands, emphasizing environmental stewardship and the preservation of ranching heritage. Originally a sheep ranch, it transitioned to cattle ranching in the early 20th century before becoming a bison ranch in 1989. Today, Zapata Ranch sustains a herd of approximately 2,000 wild bison and a smaller herd of cattle, managed with practices that mimic natural patterns to regenerate and improve pasture, soil, and ecological health. Visitors can immerse themselves in ranch life by participating in daily activities such as horseback riding, cattle drives, and observing the bison herd. The ranch offers tailored itineraries to match guests' riding abilities and interests, including trail riding, cattle work, and even non-riding activities like hiking and cooking classes. Guests can also explore the diverse landscape, from meadows and wetlands to sand dunes and cottonwood groves, while learning about the ranch's conservation efforts. The ranch's lodge, dating back to the 1800s, provides comfortable accommodations with a rustic Southwestern décor. Guests can enjoy gourmet meals prepared with local produce and meats, including bison from the ranch's herd. The dining experience emphasizes local Western ingredients cooked with creativity and respect, often incorporating Ivan's family heritage influence from the Mexican states of Veracruz and Michoacán. Zapata Ranch is more than just a vacation destination; it's an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about conservation, and experience the authentic ranching lifestyle.
